Members of the Medical Spanish Interest Group (MSIG) and Pediatric Interest Group (PIG) at the Whiddon College of Medicine partnered with Dwell Mobile to provide health education and resources during the nonprofit organization’s annual Wellness Fair.
Held each fall, the Wellness Fair brings together community organizations and health care professionals to provide health screenings, patient education and resources to Mobile-area residents, including refugee families who have relocated to the area.
Whiddon College of Medicine students provided education on burn prevention, dental hygiene and medication safety during the event. PIG members also assisted with children, while MSIG members helped facilitate communication with attendees.
“Between the pediatric group representatives assisting with the children and the Medical Spanish Interest Group’s ability to assist in communication, our group made a strong team and was able to step up to meet the needs of the Wellness Fair,” said Ashlyn Conner, a third-year medical student.
The Wellness Fair brought together representatives from several local organizations, including the USA Health Department of Pediatrics, the Lions Club of Mobile, and the Mobile County Health Department. In addition to health education and screenings, the event featured face painting, salsa dancing, prizes and raffles.
Dwell Mobile provides post-resettlement services and support to refugee families and other immigrants in the Mobile area. The organization offers resources designed to help individuals build relationships and develop practical skills, including free group English classes and subject-focused groups for citizenship, driving and GED preparation.
The Medical Spanish Interest Group also partners with Dwell Mobile to provide one-on-one English lessons. Medical students facilitate individualized English-learning sessions for participants every other week.
“We are grateful that Dwell Mobile has allowed us to become a regular part of this annual Wellness Fair,” Conner said. “I am thankful for the opportunity to provide patient education and contribute to building a healthier community here in Mobile.”
