Schweitzer Fellowship meet and greetThe Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine will sponsor two students each year to participate in the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama, providing students with an opportunity to develop leadership skills while addressing health needs in underserved communities.

Kim Eaton, executive director of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama, visited the Whiddon College of Medicine this week for a meet-and-greet to introduce students and faculty to the fellowship and its opportunities for graduate and professional students.

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is a 15-month, mentored program in which students design and implement community-based projects that address unmet health needs. Fellows commit more than 200 hours to community service while receiving mentorship, training and coaching throughout the fellowship year.

The Alabama program is part of a national network of programs focused on preparing the next generation of leaders in health and service. Launched in 2015, the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama is one of 10 active Schweitzer program sites nationwide.

Each year, fellows are selected through a competitive process from graduate and professional programs across Alabama. Fellows represent a variety of health-related disciplines and work in partnership with communities to address health disparities and other pressing health challenges.

The fellowship emphasizes hands-on community engagement, leadership development, cultural humility, project development and advocacy. Fellows also gain access to mentors and a statewide network of peers and alumni from multiple institutions.

The 15-month fellowship includes bi-monthly training and small-group or individual coaching sessions. Fellows receive a $2,500 stipend and $100 in project funds to support their work.

Students interested in applying for the next class of Alabama Schweitzer Fellows must be enrolled in a graduate or professional health-related program during the fellowship year, which runs from February 2027 through April 2028. The application deadline is Jan. 25, 2027.
