Aishwarya Prakash, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine, has been elected vice president-elect of the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society (EMGS), an international scientific organization focused on understanding how environmental exposures affect genetic material and human health.

Prakash’s election begins a four-year leadership commitment in which she will serve successively as vice president-elect, vice president, president and past president of the society.

In her role as vice president-elect, Prakash will attend monthly executive board meetings, co-chair the Special Interest Groups chairs group and serve on the EMGS Council.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the broader scientific community, and I’m especially excited to represent the University of South Alabama in this capacity,” Prakash said.

EMGS brings together scientists and other professionals working to understand and reduce the effects of environmental exposures on the genome. The society promotes research, professional development and collaboration to help protect human health from environmental hazards.
