Standardized Patient Program
The standardized patient program at the University of South Alabama helps to better prepare both practitioners and health professions students in the development of physical examination, communication, and interpersonal skills. Our standardized patient (SP) pool consists of more than 150 individuals hired as independent contractors. They range from ages 18 to 89 and come from diverse backgrounds such as nursing, acting, teaching, and engineering, to name a few. SPs are a vital part of providing learners an opportunity to practice effective communication and examination techniques in a clinical setting. They are highly trained not only to portray patients, family members, or healthcare personnel, but also to provide learners with constructive feedback.
