Upcoming bird outreach events featuring Biology faculty member Joel Borden. Joel will be participating in several events as part of Blakeley Historic Park, Continuing Education’s Odyssey Program, and the Alabama Coastal Birdfest!

Details below:

University of South Alabama - Continuing Education - Odyssey Program Course Descriptions for Fall 2021:

Introduction to Bird Biology Part I: Anatomy, Physiology, & Evolution

Part 1 of this 2-part series will cover avian structure, function, and relationships to other vertebrate clades. Featured sessions will include the evolution of feathers & flight, perceptions of their environment, anatomical specialties, metabolic function, and how they evolved from a dinosaur ancestor. If there is interest within the class, we may also take several walks, weather permitting, around campus to look at local species.

Introduction to Bird Biology Part II: Behavior, Ecology, & Conservation

In Part 2, we will cover social/mating behavior, bird brains & learning, song structure, population dynamics, species interactions & ecosystem services, causes of population declines, and ways to mitigate future species losses. If there is interest within the class, we may also take several walks, weather permitting, around campus to look at local species.

Alabama Coastal Birdfest Workshop

Date: Oct 8th, 2021

AVIAN CONSERVATION: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE  – Tensaw Theatre at 5 Rivers |  Explore the history of human exploitation of avian populations, causes (past and present) of species declines and the efforts applied to mitigate habitat/species losses, and future problems associated with increased land use/alteration, climate change, and sea level rise. Joel Borden is a vertebrate ecologist and instructor of biology at the University of South Alabama where he has been active in education and research in avian biology for over 10 years.
