The American Society of Civil Engineering Student Chapter is hosting the inaugural 2019 High School Conference on the main campus of the University of South Alabama to educate local high schoolers about the civil engineering profession. To do this, ASCE will hold various competitions that are free to participants and displays the range of sub disciplines that are within the civil spectrum. For example, there will be an environmental engineering and structural engineering competition, which will be a balsa wood bridge, a scaled concrete canoe, and a water filter from everyday household materials. The rules will state how each competition will be judged. With clearance from the school board and teachers, South students will go to each participating school and introduce the topics and competitions, and university student mentors will be assigned to each school. The mentors will schedule time with the assembled teams to ask questions to and assist students.
