COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate

Dear USA Students, Faculty and Staff,

In September, The White House announced its “Path Out of the Pandemic” COVID-19 Action Plan, which includes an Executive Order from President Joe Biden containing new requirements related to vaccinations for COVID-19. Our leadership team has reviewed the Executive Order to determine what actions the University is legally obligated to take in response.

USA, like other major public universities in Alabama and across the country, receives significant funding from the federal government through federal contracts, without which the University’s ability to fulfill its mission would be critically undermined. For the University to remain eligible for this funding, certain categories of USA employees, including certain student employees, will be required under the Executive Order to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, or receive a medical or religious exemption, by the federally mandated deadline of January 5, 2022.

Employees covered by the Executive Order who are not already fully vaccinated for COVID-19 will need to start the vaccination process by the dates listed below to be able to achieve full vaccination status by the January 5, 2022. deadline.

  • Moderna: first dose by December 7, 2021; second dose by January 4, 2022.
  • Pfizer: first dose by December 14, 2021; second dose by January 4, 2022.
  • Johnson & Johnson: single dose by January 4, 2022.

USA leadership will continue to monitor any legal developments impacting this matter, and will communicate updates as needed.
