The University of South Alabama and Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services hold a ribbon-cutting of the state’s first Traumatic Brain Injury Center that will be housed in the ROTC Building. The center will serve the needs of active service members, Veterans and civilians living with traumatic brain injuries.

A partnership between the University of South Alabama and The Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services’ Traumatic Brain Injury Program will provide expanded services to Veterans, active military service members and others living with the long-term effects of a brain injury.

The Traumatic Brain Injury Center on South’s campus is the first of five planned openings in Alabama. It will be housed in the USA ROTC facility until the University opens a planned new facility for the Office of Military Services.

“This center will provide the kind of services, the kind of compassion and the kind of care our Veterans, our National Guard and all of those in the military deserve,” USA President Jo Bonner said.

The Traumatic Brain Injury Centers of Alabama initiative was made possible by Gov. Kay Ivey, the Alabama Legislature and the State Veterans Mental Health Steering Committee.

While the focus is on veterans and active military, treatment is not reserved for injuries sustained on the battlefield.

“With this expansion, we’re able to serve the chronic needs of anybody with a traumatic brain injury, not just those coming out of acute settings,” said April Turner, director of the Alabama Traumatic Brain Injury Program.

The Traumatic Brain Injury Centers of Alabama will provide helpline information, screening and symptom support, referral and resource navigation, care coordination and community resource support, social re-integration, veteran peer mentorship and clinic services.

In addition to Mobile, locations are planned for Opelika, Birmingham, Enterprise and Huntsville.
