Types of Diabetes

Type 1

  • Common in children & young adults
  • Body stops making insulin
  • Take insulin or medicine every day

Type 2

  • Most common type of diabetes
  • The body makes insulin, but doesn't use it well
  • Needs more insulin than it makes

Pre-Diabetes

  • Body is having trouble keeping blood sugar in a healthy range
  • May later develop Type 2 Diabetes

Gestational

  • Pregnancy hormones sometimes change the body's ability to make or use insulin
  • Can go away or turn into Type 2 Diabetes

Diagnosis

3 types of tests to diagnose diabetes:

  1. HbA1c: measures your average blood sugar levels over 3 months (Diabetic if A1c ≥ 6.5%)
  2. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test: is a finger prick test after an 8 hour minimum of no eating/drinking anything other than water (Diabetic if ≥ 126 mg/dl on 2 separate tests)
  3. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test: intake of a sweet drink containing a known amount of glucose and then test to see how your body took it
