High Blood Pressure Information: Causes and Symptoms

What Is It?

When the heart pumps blood through the arteries, the blood puts pressure on the artery walls. This is known as blood pressure. 

  • Normal Blood Pressure is lower than 120/80 mmHg.
  • Blood pressure higher than 120/80 is called Hypertension

 

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

  • Systolic: 130 mm Hg or higher or
  • Diastolic: 80 mm Hg or higher

Elevated Blood Pressure

  • Systolic: 120-129 mm Hg and
  • Diastolic: less than 80 mm Hg

Normal Blood Pressure

  • Systolic: less than 120 mm Hg and
  • Diastolic: less than 80 mm Hg

What Are The Symptoms?

High blood pressure may not cause any noticeable symptoms early on, however over time health issues may occur. 

  • Stroke
  • Vision decline or loss
  • Heart disease
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Pregnancy-related complications
  • Decline in thinking skills
  • Dementia
  • Other health problems

What Causes It?

Diets high in salt, saturated and trans fats, and added sugar can lead to obesity, which increases your risk of high blood pressure.

  • Not enough exercise
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Stress
  • Blood pressure naturally increases as we age
