Gulf Scholars Program Informational Meetings

The University of South Alabama Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences is recruiting students to form our 4th annual cohort of students. The GSP is a National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) funded program that gives Undergraduate students fully funded opportunities to participate in meaningful creative arts, STEM research, and community focused projects.

The Gulf Scholars Program at South is open to current students and transfer students within their first or second undergraduate year across all majors and requires a two-year long commitment. The program includes field trips, community engagement, formal mentorship opportunities, a funded research experience, and skills development in leadership, innovation, communication and teamwork.

  • Join a community and inclusive learning environment at the University of South Alabama.
  • Help promote contextual understanding of Gulf Coast resilience challenges and cultures.
  • Be part of a team of faculty and student researchers that work to address these resilience challenges.
  • Become a leader and innovator surrounding future hazard resilience and climate adaptation.

This year, we are putting a special focus on South's Arts and Humanities students! We are actively recruiting students to participate in on of the fully funded project opportunities:

  1. Fairhope Pier Through Artistic Signage - Re-imagine the Fairhope Pier with creative signage that blends local history, storytelling, and visual design.
  2. Translating Disaster Preparedness into Action - Help communities stay safe by creating accessible, multilingual outreach materials that merge language, empathy, and design.
  3. Promoting Campus Sustainability - Work with Sustainability at South to develop sustainability outreach materials and programs for new students, staff, and faculty across campus and USA Health.
  4. Create a Passion Project with Real-World Impact - Have a STEM research idea of your own? Have a story to share through creative writing, art installation, film, or another creative medium? Design and lead a project that reflects your unique interests. Personal projects should be related to the gulf coast region but are not limited to Arts and Humanities.
