Assistant Professor Position

The Department of Physics at the University of South Alabama invites applications for a full-time (nine-month), tenure-track assistant professor position to begin August 15, 2027. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in experimental physics or a closely related field, and must show evidence of excellence in teaching and research, with strong potential for external funding. Teaching duties include a wide spectrum of undergraduate physics lecture and laboratory courses, which may include introductory astronomy and astrophysics. Facilitating participation of undergraduate students in research is actively encouraged. The candidate should have relevant experience beyond the doctoral degree, preferably a postdoctoral appointment, with a strong record of publication and/or impact in the field, and is expected to conduct experimental research which will either strengthen the Department’s current research in atomic-molecular-optical (AMO) physics, condensed matter physics, or high-energy physics – or start a strong program in a relevant field, such as observational astrophysics or biological/medical physics.

The University of South Alabama is a comprehensive, state-supported R2 institution with over 14,000 students. Currently, the Department of Physics has ten full-time faculty and five part-time instructors and offers a B.S. degree in Physics. AMO physics work specializes in ultra-cold Rydberg and atomic collisions. Condensed-matter physics work specializes in nanomaterials for photocatalysis and clean-energy technologies, and in superconductors – with an on-site 9-T physical-properties-measurement apparatus, as well as ongoing collaborations with NHMFL. High-energy physics faculty work on the BABAR, BELLE II, Mu2e and NOvA experiments. All Physics Department faculty members have access to the facilities of the Alabama Supercomputing Authority. Further information about the Department is available at http://physics.southalabama.edu.

Application Deadline: Monday, November 30, 2026, by 5:00 PM Central Time.

How to apply:

Send an email to the Search Committee at physics-search@southalabama.edu with the following attached as a single PDF file, in order:

  1. cover letter (1-2 pages)
