Posted on May 16, 2022 by USA College of Engineering

The Steel Founders Society of America hosted the 2022 “Cast in Steel” national competition in Columbus, Ohio. This year’s
competition challenged students to design and produce a functioning Celtic Leaf Sword. As a part of the competition, each sword was put through a series of tests. This
year the University of South Alabama team earned 2nd place in the “Best Authentic Celtic Leaf Sword” category. The team members were Marvin Copeland, Matthew Harris, Ian Jones, Ashton Smith, Gavin
Strickland, and Andrew Trattles, all mechanical engineering students. Faculty Advisors
on the project were Drs. Melike Dizbay-Onat and Aref Yadollahi, both from the William B. Burnsed Jr. Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering Department.
