Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program

The Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program consists of 114 semester hours and is eight consecutive semesters long. For example, students who enter the program in Fall 2024 will graduate in May 2027. A new class of occupational therapy students begins each year in the Fall semester. Applications are available in the summer the year prior to the fall start date (example- summer 2023 and spring 2024 applications due for fall 2024 admissions). Selected applicants, who meet all academic admission requirements, may be invited for an interview. Students who are offered admission may choose to guarantee a seat by submitting a matriculation fee (applied towards tuition) or be placed on the alternate list. All students accepted to the program must complete a criminal background check. Admission is contingent on the background check being clear of criminal charges.

The OTD program includes 24 weeks of full-time Level II Fieldwork as accreditation standards require. All Level II Fieldwork must be completed within 12 months following completion of academic requirements. Level II Fieldwork is available in various medical and community sites, representing diverse learning opportunities for students. Students must meet the specific site requirements (immunizations, background checks, drug screens, prior training, etc......… ) for each clinical fieldwork site to be eligible to attend these sites.

The OTD program also includes the required 14-week doctoral capstone (experience and project) affording a variety of options for in-depth exposure to one or more of the following focus areas: clinical practice skills, research skills, administration, leadership, program and policy development, advocacy, education, or theory development. Students must successfully complete all coursework, successfully pass both level II fieldwork rotations, and complete all preparatory activities as required prior to beginning the capstone experience. The Capstone Experience must be completed within 12 months following completion of all level II fieldwork and academic requirements.

Current Status: Candidacy Granted

This new OTD program must have a pre-accreditation review, complete an on-site evaluation, and be granted Accreditation Status before its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, all states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.

OTD students must successfully complete 24 weeks of Level II fieldwork, as well as, the individual 14-week capstone experience within 12 months following the completion of the didactic portion of the program. The doctoral capstone experience must be started after completion of all required coursework and Level II fieldwork as well as completion of preparatory activities defined in the 2018 OTD Standard D.1.3.

ACOTE® accredited occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant educational programs satisfy the states’ educational requirements in all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Students graduating from an ACOTE® accredited occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant educational program are eligible to take the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certification exam and apply for licensure in all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
