Lani Kosick Ames (Class of 2017)

I graduated from USA in 2017 with a double major in Anthropology and Philosophy. Shortly afterwards, I began my career at the History Museum of Mobile, where I was able to translate anthropological thinking into public history, cultural interpretation, and community engagement. I later went on to earn a Master’s in Cultural Heritage Management and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Digital Curation from Johns Hopkins University. In 2023, I began my doctoral studies in Organizational Leadership at Adler University, a social justice-focused institution that aligns closely with the values of equity, belonging, and community-centered leadership. My research examines how inclusive leadership practices foster psychological safety within organizations, and I am on track to complete my dissertation in Spring 2026.
After relocating to upstate New York, I completed two AmeriCorps VISTA terms centered on capacity building and poverty alleviation. Beginning in November 2025, I will step into the role of Resource and Engagement Manager at the Rural Health Network of South Central New York, where I will oversee human resources, resource development, communications, and marketing. I also lead workshops and trainings on organizational culture, inclusive leadership, and psychological safety for local nonprofits, as well as in partnership with the State University of New York (SUNY) Binghamton';s Employee Assistance Program. I can honestly say I’ve found my “dream job," supporting the community I grew up in while ensuring the folks doing the work are empowered and valued.
When I look back, anthropology remains the throughline. It taught me to understand people, culture, and systems first, and that foundation continues to shape how I lead, build programs, and strive to show up in community.
