Natalie (Sands) Smith (Class of 2018)
I graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2018 with a BA in Anthropology
and a minor in Forensic Science. I have now returned to USA, where I am pursuing a
Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. My undergraduate education in Anthropology
helped prepare me for my future role as a provider by teaching me to think holistically
and giving me a unique perspective on patient care.
During my time in the Anthropology Program at USA, I had many experiences that helped prepare me for my future education and career. I had the opportunity to present my undergraduate research at the annual AAPA Conference, intern at the Mobile Medical Museum, assist with the forensic recovery of human remains, and participate in a variety of volunteer opportunities. Each of these experiences allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom and helped me develop skills that I have carried with me throughout my education.
Even though my professional pathway took me through several different fields, I ultimately
decided to pursue a career in healthcare. Coming back to USA for my graduate program
has allowed me to build on the foundation I developed as an
undergraduate, and I am so happy to be back where it all began. I am grateful for
all of the experiences I had at USA’s Anthropology Program and the ways they continue
to impact my mindset in healthcare and my future role as a physician assistant.
