Flow Cytometry Shared Resource Laboratories

The University of South Alabama College of Medicine Flow Cytometry Shared Resource Laboratories (FCSRL) are located in the Medical Sciences Building (MSB 2264/2228) and the Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI 3085). These facilities provide comprehensive flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting services to researchers across the USA system and external institutions.

Both locations house a BD Biosciences FACSAria SORP cell sorter, capable of analyzing up to 12 fluorescence parameters using four laser lines (UV, 488 nm, 561 nm, and 640 nm). The instruments support multiple sorting formats, including 4-way tube sorting and automated single-cell deposition into 96-well plates.

The MSB facility also houses an Agilent NovoCyte Quanteon flow cytometer, offering up to 25 fluorescence channels with advanced multi-color analysis capabilities and automated sample handling for tubes and multiwell plates. The MCI facility features an Agilent NovoCyte Opteon spectral flow cytometer, enabling high-dimensional analysis with simultaneous detection of more than 40 markers.

The FCSRL is directed by Dr. Robert Barrington, who has more than 25 years of experience in flow cytometry. Day-to-day operations are managed by Domenico Spadafora, who has more than 10 years of cytometry experience.
