Nine student members of the Financial Management Association attended the 2018 FMA Leaders' Conference on March 8th and 9th in Chicago, Illinois. The students were Colin Knight, Tyler Guest, Hong Nguyen, Alexander Wentz, Brooke Carlan, James Gosnell, Mignone Perry, and Jesus Gonzalez. Dr. Ken Hunsader attended the trip as faculty advisor. At the conference, the students attended several seminars, including Take Charge of Your Professional Development, The Future of Finance, Theory and Prevention of Fraud, Go Beyond the Resume, and Uncertain Times in Today’s Economy - An Outlook for 2018, by Sam Stovall, a regular guest on CNBC and Chief Investment Strategist at CFRA, Equity and Fund Research. The students also toured the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and Morningstar's headquarters. One of the highlights of the conference is the annual quiz bowl. Teams of two or three students from any university attending the conference can participate and the quiz bowl is divided into two rounds. The first round is a written exam, and the top sixteen teams from the exam move on to the second round, which is a sweet 16 type of tournament with the 1st place team competing vs the 16th, the 2nd versus the 15th , and so on. Each stage of this round is five to eight verbal questions where the teams have to quickly decide and write their answers. Out of 21 teams from around the country, such as Purdue University, Arizona State University, and Eastern Michigan University, two of our teams performed quite well. One placed first on the exam portion, and a second team placed fourth on the exam portion, and both were able to move on to the second round the next day. In the second round, our first place exam team placed in the top eight, and our team which came in fourth on the exam portion, placed second. Congratulations to these students!
