Dr. Bob G. Wood, dean of the Mitchell College of Business at the University of South Alabama, has been named 2020 Dean of the Year by Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society.

The national award recognizes an outstanding dean who made significant contributions to the success of his or her chapter throughout the course of the academic year. Wood has made advancement of Beta Gamma Sigma part of the business college mission at South.

“When Dean Wood arrived at the University of South Alabama in 2014, the Mitchell College of Business chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, chartered in 1977, was dormant,” said Dr. Gwendolyn Pennywell, interim assistant dean. “Many students thought of it as a line item for a resume and nothing else. Bob’s vision, support, and encouragement have benefited the chapter in numerous ways.”

In addition to work with the business honor society, Wood has expanded the college’s advisory council, implemented a Professional Readiness Engagement Program, and converted the Doctor of Business Administration program to a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration with concentrations in management and marketing.

South students joined the business faculty in congratulating Wood:

“Dean Wood has been nothing but a beacon of hope for every student he interacts with,” said Briana Ladnier, Class of 2022. “He is constantly engaging with students and ensuring everyone in his college is represented and satisfied. I will be eternally grateful for his contributions to my academics while at South.”

“Dr. Wood greatly impacted my time as a part of the Mitchell College of Business,” said Ian Peek, Class of 2020. “After interviewing with him as a senior in high school, I knew that South was home. His guidance, sense of humor, and standard of excellence in MCOB provided such a great environment for success. He deserves this award more than anyone.”
