SENATE RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING PARTNERS 2018

 

The USA Faculty Senate awarded four outstanding partners at its annual awards ceremony on November 14, 2018. The ceremony allows faculty to publicly recognize community and business partners in the Mobile area who enhanced the university’s mission of teaching, research and service.

 

Tracy Jay, EdD, president of the Environmental Science Center (ESC), received the Outstanding Research Partner Award for her support of USA’s research mission. Faculty and students have conducted research on the ESC grounds. Students have also worked as volunteers and paid interns at the ESC. Dr. Juan Luis Mata nominated Jay for the award.

 

Billy Duren accepted the Outstanding Teaching Award on behalf of Threaded Fasteners, Inc. for its support of USA’s teaching mission. Threaded Fasteners donated the start-up funds to launch the Tideline Student Agency and actively works with students each semester on projects for the company. Dr. Patricia Mark nominated Duren for the award.

 

Curtis Graves, Mobile Police Department Commander, received the Outstanding Community Partner Award. He facilitated a partnership between USA faculty and local schools to implement trauma-informed training for teachers and staff and violence prevention programs for students. Dr. Krista Mehari nominated Graves for the award.

 

Dr. Sarah Koon-Magnin, associate professor of criminal justice at USA, received the Semoon Chang Humanitarian Award. Koon-Magnin’s published work deals with perceptions of sex offender legislation, the experience of sexual assault victimization and responses to sexual violence. She improves the lives of victims by volunteering with the Rape Crisis Center, the Mobile County Sexual Assault Response Team and the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office. She is the organizer of Girls Night Out that invites female-identified students to discuss healthy relationships, boundary setting, domestic violence, sexual assault and bystander intervention. Dr. Lesley Gregoricka nominated Koon-Magnin for the award.

The Research Community Parner Award is for providing direct support to the research mission of USA faculty through financial, in-kind, personnel, expertise, office space, consulting, or other means.

The Education Community Partner Award is for providing direct support to the teaching mission of USA faculty, broadly defined, by providing a setting and/or skilled supervision for USA students. This partner enhances the educational mission of the USA faculty by providing internship/externship/field placement to USA students.

The Outstanding Community Partner Award is for an organization/agency that works with USA faculty to address needs of the greater Mobile community through collaborative research and/or service delivery.
