Notes:
Through the collaboration of the Faculty Senate and the Office of Academic Computing, extraordinary steps were taken to insure the anonymity of all responses. The survey was announced campus wide via e-mail to all faculty accounts.
The survey was conducted between October 7th, 2003 and January 16, 2004. Of the 695 faculty eligible, 230 surveys were completed.
Thanks to all who took the time to complete this survey. We invite your comments and suggestions for the next survey, which will be conducted in March immediately after Spring Break. For example, are there questions you would like to see added/deleted?

How Was the Survey Conducted?
This is the second year that the USA Faculty Survey was conducted online. Through the collaboration of the Faculty Senate and the Office of Academic Computing, extraordinary steps were taken to insure the anonymity of all responses. The survey was announced campus wide via e-mail to all faculty accounts.
The survey was conducted between May 13 and June 10, 2002. 232 surveys were completed, approximately 35.37% of the total faculty. Although worse than last year's, the turnout is comparable to the times when paper surveys were conducted. The timing of this year's survey has been given as the primary reason for the lower turnout given that many nine-month employees had already left the campus when the survey was released. The Computer Services Center received the data and, immediately upon the conclusion of the survey, provided the Faculty Senate with statistical compilations. The data displayed on these web pages are therefore what was returned to the Senate by the Computer Services Center. The formatting of the results on these pages is the responsibility of the Faculty Senate, not of the Computer Services Center.
The main difference between this survey and previous surveys is the inclusion of eighteen free-response, open-ended questions by means of which faculty could provide comments to questions pointedly placed throughout the survey. This gave the faculty member the opportunity to expand upon his or her thoughts with regards to specific questions offering a point of view or a suggestion. As opposed to the box left for comments at the end of previous surveys which were often left blank, many faculty took the time to fill these boxes out with their opinions.
A summary of the answers for each of the eighteen questions is provided at the end of the data. The complete text of commentaries is available for viewing upon request. President Moulton will receive a copy of the complete text. Others in the administration both at upper and lower levels will be shown the aspects of the survey that pertain to them specifically.
Thanks to all who took the time to complete this survey. We invite your comments and suggestions for the next survey, which will be conducted in March immediately after Spring Break. For example, are there questions you would like to see added/deleted?

Fourteenth Faculty Survey
April 2001
The USA Faculty Senate needs your comments on the results from this year's survey. What do you make of the data? What should we make of them?
Once we've heard from you, the Senate will produce a written report on the survey for the faculty and the administration. The Senate will also use the survey and the written report as the basis for representing the faculty to the administration and the community over the coming year.
If confidentiality is a concern, you may send written comments to:

How Was the Survey Conducted?
- For the first time, the USA Faculty Survey was conducted online. Through the collaboration of the Faculty Senate and the Office of Academic Computing, extraordinary steps were taken to insure the anonymity of all responses. The survey was announced campus wide via e-mail to all faculty accounts and via fax to all department chairs.
- The survey was conducted between April 23 and May 2, 2001. 335 surveys were completed, making it the most successful recent survey.
- What's New about This Year's Survey?
- A series of questions asking faculty members to rate the University's central administration in a number of categories (similar to questions that have long been asked about college deans)
- Faculty rating of their dean on this statement: "Seeks and incorporates faculty input into decisions concerning matters vital to the mission of the unit."
- The question: "Will an additional course per semester added to faculty teaching loads have a damaging effect on the university's research mission?"
- Faculty rating of the USA Bookstore "in terms of providing faculty with timely notification of materials which have to be back ordered or requested texts which are found to be out of print."
- Faculty opinion of "the availability of cultural activities on campus"
- A series of four questions on parking on the main campus
- Two questions under "Healthcare":
-
- "What is your interest level in switching your health insurance carrier (from Prime Health to Blue Cross)?"
- "What is your interest level if changing healthcare providers significantly decreases revenue for USA Hospitals and the College of Medicine?"
- A series of questions on graduation
- The following questions or ratings about technology:
-
- "The University should institute a plan to replace faculty office computers at 3-year intervals in order to keep pace with technology."
- "I support the University decision to adopt Microsoft as a standard for word processing/ spreadsheet software"
- "The University should maintain site licenses such that programs can be purchased (by faculty and students) for a nominal fee"
- "How satisfied are you with Novell Groupwise/ USAMAIL (USA's e-mail system)?"
- "The University should increase Internet bandwidth to support the increased number of users on campus."
- A question asking faculty if they participate in distance learning.
Faculty Comments during the Survey
A box was provided at the end of the survey form to allow for written comments. These comments will be screened to insure that any information that might tend to identify their authors is removed. If it proves impossible to remove such information and still maintain the integrity of the original comment, then the comment will not be shared with anyone. Those comments that already are anonymous, or that can be edited by the Senate so as to be made anonymous, will be shared with President Moulton and/or other appropriate persons (depending upon the nature of the comment).
Questions?
If you have any other questions about the survey, please e-mail Dr. Richard Wesenberg, Chair of the Faculty Senate Committee on Evaluation, at rlwesenberg@hotmail.com.

How Was the Survey Conducted?
Faculty members were sent a survey form in the campus mail in March 2000. 306 surveys were returned to the Faculty Senate Evaluation Committee, which in turn delivered the forms to the Computer Services Center for data processing. The data displayed on these web pages is therefore what was returned to the Senate by the Computer Services Center.
How to Get a Copy of the Original Survey
If you'd like a copy of the original 2000 Survey in MS Word format, you can download it here.
What's New about This Year's Survey?
A single question concerning the Faculty Senate was replaced by two questions, one which focuses on the institutional effectiveness of the Senate, and a second which focuses on the efforts and effectiveness of the current members of the Senate (see the "Miscellaneous" section of the survey)
A question concerning the possibility of establishing a conference center on the main campus was added to the "Miscellaneous" section
An entire section of six questions was added concerning the question of football at USA to replace a single question which had appeared in previous years' surveys
A section of four questions on child day-care was substantially overhauled from last year's section, with an attempt to distinguish between faculty with and faculty without pre-K children
A section of six questions on technology was substantially modified from the format used in previous surveys
A section of seven questions on distance learning was added
If you have any questions about the survey, please e-mail Dr. Richard Wesenberg, Chair of the Faculty Senate Committee on Evaluation.
