UTeach South Science Minor

The UTeach South Science Minor allows STEM majors to prepare for a rewarding career in secondary science education while completing their bachelor's degree. Through a combination of science coursework, education coursework, and hands-on classroom experiences, students develop the knowledge and teaching skills needed to inspire the next generation of scientists, innovators, and problem-solvers. Students who complete the program may be eligible for Alabama Class B certification in their science teaching field.

Eligible Science Majors

Students pursuing the following majors may qualify for the UTeach South Science Minor:

  • Biology
  • Marine Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Environmental Toxicology
  • Meteorology
  • Other approved science-related majors

Students should meet with a UTeach South advisor early in their academic program to determine eligibility and develop a certification pathway that aligns with their degree requirements.

State of Alabama Department of Education Certification Areas

Depending on coursework completed, students may pursue certification in:

  • Biology (Grades 6–12)
  • Chemistry (Grades 6–12)
  • General Science (Grades 6–12)
  • Physics (Grades 6–12)

Certification eligibility is determined by Alabama State Department of Education requirements and successful completion of all program requirements.
