Message from the Program Director
Thank you for your interest in our Anesthesiology program. We are committed to providing outstanding clinical training in a supportive environment that helps residents grow into confident, compassionate, highly skilled anesthesiologists.
Our residents train across three campuses: University Hospital, Children's and Women's Hospital, and Providence Hospital, gaining experience with a wide variety of patients, procedures, and surgical specialties. Through increasing responsibility, close faculty mentorship, and diverse clinical experiences, residents develop the knowledge, technical skills, and clinical judgment needed for success in any career path within anesthesiology.
We are committed to helping each resident achieve their personal and professional goals, whether that includes fellowship training, private practice, academic medicine, or leadership opportunities.

The University of South Alabama (USA) Anesthesiology Residency is a three-year program. In partnership with the University of South Alabama Internal Medicine Residency Program, we offer an integrated training pathway that includes a preliminary clinical year followed by three years of anesthesiology training. Four PGY-1 positions are offered annually through the Internal Medicine Residency Program, with residents advancing to CA-1 positions the following year. This results in a total complement of twelve residents across the CA-1 through CA-3 years.
Clinical experiences across all campuses are structured to provide progressive responsibility throughout training while ensuring exposure to a broad range of perioperative environments and patient populations. The block schedule is organized into thirteen four-week blocks per academic year.
Major rotations include general anesthesia, critical care, regional anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, cardiothoracic anesthesia, ambulatory anesthesia, non-operating room anesthesia (NORA), acute pain services, and interventional pain management.
Residents participate in a variety of educational activities, including Grand Rounds, ICU and Pain Conferences, Case Presentations, Patient Safety and Quality Improvement conferences, Journal Club, and Board Review.
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible for our program:
- Graduation from an allopathic medical school or college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
- Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States and meeting one of the
following additional qualifications:
- Holding a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)
- Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the USA licensing jurisdiction in which they are training
Applicants applying for the CA-1 year only must have successfully completed 12 months of education in fundamental clinical skills of medicine in a program meeting one of the following requirements:
- Completed in an ACGME-accredited residency program
- Completed in an AOA-approved residency program
- Completed in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RSPSC) accredited or College of Family Physicians in Canada (CFPC) accredited residency programs located in Canada
- Completion in a residency program with ACGME International (ACGME-1) Advanced Specialty Accreditation
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship to be eligible.
Application Process
The University of South Alabama program participates in ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). All positions are offered through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Required application materials include:
- Official medical school transcripts
- Official record of board scores (NMBE, FLEX, USMLE, LMCC, COMLEX)
- Minimum of three letters of recommendation
- Curriculum vitae
- Personal statement

Applicants Seeking Both a PGY-1 and CA-1 Position
The Department of Anesthesiology partners with USA Internal Medicine Residency Program to offer four preliminary positions designated for future anesthesiology residents.
Applicants who have not completed a preliminary year and wish to begin training at USA as a PGY-1 and continue into our anesthesiology residency as a CA-1 must apply separately to both of the following programs:

Applicants who have completed a preliminary year before entering anesthesiology training may apply directly to:

Applicants seeking a CA-1 position only will be invited for interviews during the upcoming cycle but will not join the program until the 2028-2029 academic year.
