Three School of Computing students—Charlie Dykes (Information Technology, Networks Focus), Miguel Martinez (Civil Engineering, IT minor), and Chandler Thammasine (Information Technology, Networks Focus & Digital Forensics)—recently completed internships with the University of South Alabama’s Computer Services Center, contributing to projects that strengthened campus network operations.

During the internship period, Dykes developed PHP-based wireless weather maps for every building on campus using LibreNMS, an open-source monitoring platform. These visualizations provide the networking team with real-time insight into Wi-Fi traffic loads, helping identify peak usage times and supporting network traffic management. Reflecting on the experience, Dykes said, “It was a highly rewarding experience to learn the networking team’s operational processes and support network services for campuses across the USA.”

Martinez and Thammasine conducted detailed Wi-Fi mapping in Shelby Hall and other buildings using Ekahau AI Pro, documenting access points to support troubleshooting, detect unauthorized devices, and guide classroom and coverage planning.

CSC Data and Voice Networks Manager and Intern Supervisor, Cameron Pauk, praised their impact: “After hiring our team of interns, what started as a small project to document parts of our network quickly evolved into the interns being capable of much more. From performing full Wi-Fi surveys using industry-standard tools like Ekahau to working with campus fiber optic infrastructure, our intern team has gained valuable experience and formed a strong mold for the next class of CSC Networking interns.”

Martinez noted the hands-on learning and exposure to real-world challenges, while Thammasine emphasized gaining practical networking skills and seeing how concepts apply in a professional environment.
