Catherine Cooper Named Chair of Radiologic Sciences Department

Catherine Cooper, M.S., R.T.(R)(CT)(BD), ARRT, has been named chair of the Department of Radiologic Sciences for the Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions.

Cooper joined the Department of Radiologic Sciences as an instructor in 2000 and earned promotion to senior instructor in 2008. She served as clinical coordinator from 2010 to 2023 and has served as interim chair since August 2023.

“Ms. Cooper is the ideal person for this position as she has a strong national reputation and a strong vision for the department and its programs,” Dr. Susan Gordon-Hickey, dean of the Covey College of Allied Health Professions, said.

“Having been a faculty member of the Department of Radiologic Sciences for 24 years, I am truly excited about this new chapter and the chance to collaborate with the University, Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions and the department,” Cooper said.

Cooper is registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in radiography, computed tomography and bone densitometry. Prior to joining USA, she served as a radiologic technologist at Providence Hospital and gained experience precepting students which inspired her to pursue a career as an educator.

Cooper holds a master’s degree in instructional design and development and a bachelor’s degree in radiologic sciences from the University of South Alabama. She also earned a certificate in radiologic technology from the University of South Alabama. She is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in instructional design and development.

Cooper is an active member in the Alabama Society of Radiologic Technologists where she has served on the executive board and as president of the association. She has also served in a variety of leadership roles as an active member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. Since 2016, she has served as a site visitor for the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.

“My main goal is to enhance the educational experience for our students, foster professional growth among our faculty, and contribute to the continued success and growth of our program,” Cooper shared. “I also envision a supportive environment where students feel a sense of community, leading to increased enrollment and a strong sense of pride among program graduates.” 

“For nearly 25 years, Ms. Cooper has been essential to the Department of Radiologic Sciences as a faculty member, clinical coordinator and leader, and we are excited to have her leading us into the future,” Gordon-Hickey said.
