First-Gen Scholar Edgar Escalante Blazes Trail from Lab to Medical School Goal
Posted on December 11, 2025 by CAHP
The Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions is proud to feature Edgar
Escalante, a Biomedical Sciences major and first-generation student who is making
a substantial mark on undergraduate research at the University. Edgar, who is also
a minor in chemistry, has already been recognized with the Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding
Poster Award and is a published author in a peer-reviewed chemistry journal.
His ultimate goal is to attend the University of South Alabama College of Medicine,
and his undergraduate research is preparing him every step of the way.
Research at the Intersection of Health and Chemistry
Edgar's ongoing research, spanning the labs of Dr. Terry Ravine, associate professor
of Biomedical Sciences, and Dr. James Davis, professor of Chemistry, focuses on synthesizing
and testing more eco-friendly disinfectant compounds. We asked him how this work prepares
him for a future in medicine: "My research on disinfectant compounds has expanded
my understanding of their chemical composition and how they work against common pathogens,
but also equipped me with knowledge about different kinds of pathogens and their mechanisms
of infection, all of which are essential in medicine."
The Reward of Discovery
As a first-generation student, Edgar finds powerful motivation in his work. He notes
that the most rewarding part of his involvement is seeing positive results, explaining
his research to friends and family, and the thrill of seeing other departments come
together to reach a common goal.
Advice for Aspiring Researchers
Edgar's journey is a testament to perseverance. For other Biomedical Sciences students
seeking research opportunities, he offers invaluable advice: "Do not be afraid of
rejection. I initially felt discouraged, but I still kept knocking on doors. Thankfully,
Dr. Ravine was kind enough to give me an opportunity. Do not be afraid of asking for
a shot, because you never know who will say yes."
He also advises students to diversify their experience: "Shadow and try out different
labs before committing. Make sure your research focus is something that makes you
excited because there may be times you'll have to spend early mornings or late nights
working on your project."
