Shelby Fields, a Speech and Hearing Sciences student in the University of South Alabama
Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions, has been selected as a recipient
of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society Dr. Alicia Salvage Scholarship.
Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society recognizes the academic excellence of adult learners.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, the national honor society awarded several scholarships
to adult students, including six named awards of $3,000.
For Fields, the recognition is especially meaningful.
“As a first-generation and nontraditional student who returned to college as an adult, this award makes my hard work feel seen and recognizes the persistence required to continue pursuing my education while balancing life outside of the classroom,” Fields said.
The scholarship will help Fields focus on her studies, clinical shadowing, research and preparation for graduate school. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences, she plans to pursue a Doctor of Audiology degree.
Her long-term goal is to work as an audiologist in a university clinic or educational setting, helping improve the lives of patients with hearing and communication differences while also supporting future audiology students.
“More than anything, it reminds me that my path back to school has been worth it,” Fields said.
