3 Things to Know About Emergency Medical Services

The Department of Emergency Medical Services prepares students for careers as healthcare professionals through bachelor’s programs in emergency medical services and professional health sciences, a minor in emergency medical services and three certificate programs for emergency medical technicians, advanced emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

  1. Career Outlooks

    A certificate or degree from the Department of Emergency Medical Services prepares students for health-related careers as emergency medical services professionals and for advancement into a variety of health professions including medicine, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, healthcare administration and many others.

  2. Regional Impact

    Over 90% of the department’s graduates have served or are currently serving the Gulf Coast region. More than 200 members of the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department have been trained in the EMS program. Paramedic graduates are actively recruited by public and private EMS providers and fire and rescue services from along the Gulf Coast and across the country.

  3. Continuing Education

    The Continuing Medical Education housed in the Department of Emergency Medical Services provides non-credit training and continuing education courses for EMS personnel, such as emergency medical technicians and paramedics, as well as nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. The office is also an authorized training center of the American Heart Association. 

Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Services

The Department of Emergency Medical Services offers the Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Services for students interested in a career in pre-hospital medicine and EMS management. As the field of EMS continues to grow and change, leaders and educators with a background in emergency medicine are needed to help shape the future of pre-hospital medicine and healthcare. 

Bachelor of Science in Professional Health Sciences

The Department of Emergency Medical Services offers the Bachelor of Science in Professional Health Sciences for those students who want to have a well-rounded background in health sciences, but do not wish to pursue a specific professional degree. This program also allows students in pre-professional programs that change their major from specific professional degrees to apply most of their course credits towards this degree. The PHS program provides broad information in both health-related disciplines as well as health management. 

Minor in Emergency Medical Services

The Department of Emergency Medical Services offers an undergraduate minor in emergency medical services for students interested in basic and advanced emergency medical care. 

Paramedic Certificate Program

The paramedic certificate program in the Department of Emergency Medical Services prepares students for careers in pre-hospital emergency medicine and enables graduates to be employed as field paramedics in a variety of settings, such as fire-rescue departments, private ambulance services and aero-medical services, to name a few. The program can be completed in three semesters. The program must be taken as an academic credit student.  Advanced EMT is pre-requisite to the program.

Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Certificate Program

The advanced emergency medical technician certificate program, or AEMT, in the Department of Emergency Medical Services prepares students for careers in pre-hospital emergency medicine and enables graduates of the program to work as advanced emergency medical technicians in a variety of settings, such as fire departments and public and private ambulance services. The program must be taken as an academic credit student. The program can be completed in one semester.

Emergency Medical Technician Certificate Program

The emergency medical technician certificate program, or EMT, in the Department of Emergency Medical Services prepares students for careers in pre-hospital emergency medicine and enables graduates of the program to work as emergency medical technicians in a variety of settings, such as fire departments and public and private ambulance services. The program can be completed in one semester.
