Undergraduate students studying at the University of South Alabama School of Marine and Environmental Sciences are guided by a world-renown faculty with expertise ranging from fisheries sciences to marine ecology and ocean physics. Outside of classroom experiences, students have access to a variety of internship opportunities where they can gain hands-on experience prior to graduation.

Paid Summer Internship Opportunities for Undergrads

Please see the links below for some paid undergrad internship (apprenticeship) opportunities this summer. To qualify for this program, you must not graduate before December 2023. The first three positions will be based in Biloxi, MS at the MSU Coastal Research and Extension Center. The fourth position (urban wildlife) will be based in Raymond, MS at the MSU Central Research and Extension Center. The application deadline for this opportunity is February 14th. Dog River Clearwater Revival (DRCR) Seeks Intern for JAN-APRIL 2023 assisting with 8th Annual MudBottom Revival Music Festival Fundraiser

DRCR is seeking 2 unpaid interns to assist with organizing our 8th annual MudBottom Revival Music Festival. This is our biggest fundraiser event of the year. All proceeds raised have a direct impact on water quality and fund our ongoing Dog River improvement projects.

Specifically, we need someone to help with Fundraising (sponsor solicitation) and Art/Merch (event signage, t-shirts, and merchandise). You would be working under and assisting our seasoned Committee members. Your time commitment would be minimal, likely around 5 hours per week at the most, 40 hours max total between the months of January-April.

You would also be invited to attend the event free of charge of course! It is always a fun event!

Marketing & Operations Long-term Field Internship 

The Marketing & Operations intern will:

  • Work closely with Field operations manager & Osa Conservation campus coordinator in supervising and improving the conservation experience provided in the Campus.
  • Generate and lead advertising material to promote the Osa Conservation Campus.
  • Support the Field Operations manager in reaching out to visitors and finding new possible visitors to visit the Osa Conservation Campus.
  • Work alongside the science team to promote and develop workshops and courses in the Osa Conservation Campus.
  • Lead the visitors post departure survey to improve the service provided, including updating the visitors database.
  • Coordinate conservation visitors experiences with the science team, including the creation of itineraries, organizing activities and events.
  • Support the communications with nearby lodges to increase the number of day visitors.

2023 UNOLS-MATE At-Sea Technical Internship Program

The U.S. Academic Research Fleet of UNOLS-designated research ships will host 1 long-term (approximately 6 months) and 12-14 short-term (4-16 weeks each) marine technical internships in 2023 (subject to funding). Departure dates will depend on the schedule of each research cruise. We will first select candidates for internships starting in Spring, and then in Summer and Fall.

UCSC Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program

Each March we select 20 early-undergraduate Scholars from around the country to participate in a two-year conservation mentorship program focused on the summers between academic years.  Each summer Scholars receive a $4,600 stipend plus funding to cover travel, room, and board.

DISL REU Program
