Tenure Track Hire: US/Public History

The Department of History at the University of South Alabama invites applications for a full-time (9 month), tenure-track Assistant Professor position in early U.S./Public History, beginning August 15, 2027. Applicants should specialize in American history before 1877 and have a demonstrated interest and record of success in Public History. ABD candidates will be considered, but an earned Ph.D. in History or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment. 

The University of South Alabama is a public research institution with over 100 academic programs and a student body of more than 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university’s 1200 acre-campus is located in Mobile, Alabama, a port city with a diverse population, vibrant downtown, and rich cultural history. Roughly a forty-five-minute drive from the Gulf of Mexico and two hours from New Orleans, Mobile and the University of South Alabama offer unique opportunities to explore the American South and Gulf Coast.

The successful candidate will join a department of dynamic scholars and teachers committed to the goal of excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research, and service. 

Responsibilities will include teaching survey courses, especially U.S History to 1877, and upper-division and M.A. courses in Public History and the candidate’s area of specialization. The successful candidate will play an active and central role in the department’s graduate program. Experience with digital humanities is preferred but not required. History Department affiliations with university programs in African American Studies, Gender Studies, Jewish and Holocaust Studies, and the Honors College, among others, also offer a variety of interdisciplinary teaching opportunities. Additional responsibilities will include student advising and mentoring, curriculum and program development, participation in departmental, college, and university governance structures, and an active research agenda.
