Faculty and spouses tour Children’s and Women’s Hospital

Faculty and spouses were treated to lunch and a tour of the USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital on August 13.  The group was welcome by Mr. Owen Bailey, Administrator of the Hospital, who provided an overview of the unique health services provided by the hospital and the populations served.  After lunch, the group toured the hospital and was pleased to see the colorful playful décor, which makes the facility bright and cheerful.

The tour included the neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care unit, the USS Hope, a room modeled as a submarine, where children receive transfusion therapies, and the classrooms/playrooms for the children.  “We were very impressed with spacious private rooms and comfortable furnishings to help make patients and families more comfortable,” said Marjorie Icenogle.  The group was able to visit with two of the teachers who are assigned to the hospital to ensure students continue learning while in the hospital.  Belinda Baggett, Director of Volunteer Services, described many volunteer opportunities available for individuals and groups, which include assisting in the McDonalds’ family lounges, the gift shop, and the classrooms.  A highlight of the tour was a chance meeting with one of the many therapy dogs that visit the hospital regularly.
