Job Summary 

This is moderately complex work supervising staff who perform medical billing duties for clinical and hospital departments.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher level employee and is reviewed for achievement of desired results.

Examples of Job Functions

  • Supervises the clerical clinical staff to include assigning duties, preparing evaluations, approving time off, handling disciplinary issues, and training new employees.
  • Oversees staff responsible for answering phones, making appointments, and transferring calls to appropriate staff.
  • Oversees the data entry of charges and payments; ensures proper cash handling procedures are followed.
  • Oversees the staff to include reviewing encounter forms to ensure proper CPT and ICD-9 codes, following-up when appropriate coding and documentation is not available, ensuring all clinical activities are posted, handling patient inquiries related to bills and payments, and daily balancing charges and payments posted.
  • Works cooperatively with Patient Business Services (PBS) personnel to resolve problems regarding billing and collections.
  • Coordinates with hospitals, physicians, and patients to schedule surgeries.
  • Verifies insurance and performs pre-certification prior to surgeries.
  • Monitors work flow and provides any needed assistance as required to ensure services provided are adequate.
  • Orders office supplies.
  • Maintains office equipment.
  • Answers and directs telephone calls.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
  • Related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements 

High school diploma or equivalent and three years of clerical experience. Medical business office experience is preferred.

Successful completion of post high school training from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience.
