As part of Nurses Week, the University of South Alabama College of Nursing is proud to highlight students whose experiences reflect the purpose, promise and future of the profession.

Among them is Alexa Posey, a senior, fourth-year College of Nursing student set to graduate in May. Originally from Birmingham, Posey will return home after graduation, where she has accepted a registered nurse position on the gynecology-oncology floor at UAB.

Posey said clinicals helped her see the full range of opportunities in nursing and confirmed that she had chosen the right profession.

“Seeing everything that you can do as a nurse is what made me fall in love with nursing,” Posey said.

She originally imagined a future in pediatric intensive care, but her clinical experiences broadened that perspective and helped her discover a strong interest in research, something she is excited to continue exploring in her new role.

Posey, who is part of the Honors College and holds a 3.9 GPA, said South felt like home from the beginning.

“South made me feel at home, and I fell in love with it,” Posey said.

Beyond the classroom, Posey has remained active as a member of the Jaguar Marching Band, where she plays mellophone.

Her academic work has also reflected a strong commitment to nursing scholarship. In December, Posey successfully defended her BSN Honors Thesis under the mentorship of Dr. Joyce Pittman. Her project examined the limited representation of skin tone variation in nursing, medical and physical therapy textbooks and how that gap may affect students’ ability to accurately assess skin conditions across skin tones. She was also selected by the College of Nursing for this year’s recognition through the Mobile Midtown Optimist Club.

Pittman said it has been an honor to mentor Posey and watch her growth during her time in the College of Nursing.

“It has been an honor to be her mentor,” Pittman said. “Everything that Alexa has accomplished has been amazing, and I have been so excited to see her grow as a person. I can’t wait to see the work she will do when she graduates and begins caring for patients.”

As she prepares to graduate, Posey reflects the kind of student the College of Nursing is proud to recognize during Nurses Week: someone shaped by curiosity, compassion and a growing commitment to the many ways nurses can make a difference.
