Week of Welcome…and Beyond!

 

USA's Week of Welcome is designed to show new freshman and transfer students all the places you belong at South Alabama. From the moment our new students set foot in Housing at Move-In Day, through their First Night on campus, Convocation, and Get-on-Board Day, we have designed a schedule full of events — both academic and social — to highlight our special campus community.

Our goal is to help you get connected with the people, places, and groups that will make sure your time at South is spectacular. You will have the opportunity to meet students across a wide range of areas, learn about new organizations, and discover opportunities to connect with faculty in learning experiences ranging from the classroom to the Gulf of Mexico. 

We look forward to meeting you at one of these opening events. Welcome to South Alabama!

Looking to join a faith or spiritual organization on campus? Want to start the semester focused on holistic wellness? Join us for Jaguars Mind, Body, and Spirit! The program will introduce you to representatives from USA’s registered faith-based student organizations and help you get connected to the vibrant faith community here at South Alabama. Come connect with staff from the Counseling and Testing Center, Student Health Center, and Campus Recreation to ensure a holistic focus on wellness!

Jag Trivia

Details: Test your wits and learn something new about your school at the same time! Jag Trivia will question your pop culture, your sports culture, and your Jag culture! We will serve popcorn and sno-cones under the beautiful oaks on the back deck of the Rec Center.

Stop, Drop, and Dodge
7:00 - 8:00 pm
Basketball Court at Student Recreation Center
Details: Students will partake in a large dodgeball game on the basketball court. We will pack in as many students as want to play, thereby creating a last person standing concept out of tens to hundreds of players. Balls flying all over the place, bodies being splattered, arguments everywhere… what could be more fun?

Group Fitness Sampler
8:00 – 9:00 pm
Fitness Studio at Student Recreation Center
Details: Rec Center fitness instructors will hold several different fitness classes for an abbreviated amount of time. Try Indoor Cycling, Yoga, Step Aerobics, and more. Students will have the opportunity to walk in and sample different fitness classes the Rec offers and meet some of the instructors. Free fitness giveaways!

Back Yard Bash
Time: 8:00 - 10:00 pm
Delta Pavilion
RHA will host the Annual Back Yard Bash Sunday, August 19th. This will be night full of games, music, free food, and prizes. Join us as we ring in the new Academic Year!

Monday, August 20

Class of 2022 Picture

Calling the entire Class of 2022! Convocation day begins for Freshmen with the 2022 Class Picture. Red, white or blue Jag gear, or other red, white, or blue attire is recommended; first-year students are asked to come to the Mitchell by 9:45 a.m. Meet on the Mitchell Center Floor for the official picture and then move to the JagGym for the Convocation pre-game activities with Jaguar Athletics!

Convocation will feature a welcome from our President, a student speaker, and words from one of our alumni. This signature event welcomes new students and faculty to the University and is a time to welcome back returning students, faculty, staff and administration for Fall semester. This campus-wide gathering offers the opportunity to connect to the academic community at South Alabama. We will celebrate student engagement, recognize accomplishments, and celebrate the beginning of a new academic year.

Following Convocation, join the campus community for a casual lunch around the Mitchell Center Concourse. Serving stations will be on both the north and south sides.

College Open Houses
1:00pm-3:00 pm
After lunch, new students visit their academic "home" - that is the College or School that houses their major- for Dessert with the Deans. Meet your college leadership and get to know some faculty and students. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and find important offices.

Self- Guided Schedule Tour
2:00-4:00 pm
Don't get lost when classes start! After you visit your college “home” it is the perfect time for new students to find their classrooms. Take advantage of the time and resources (not to mention free water) to locate classrooms, learn the shortest way from Camelia Hall to the Life Sciences Building, and figure out parking zones.

Marx Library is hosting an Instagram photo booth stocked with fun props and flat librarians--fans with the liaison librarians' headshots. Students will locate their librarian on a poster and snap a pic with that librarian. There will be giveaways including library swag and candy so come and check it out!

Chill around the Grill

This welcome back to school cookout sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs is open to USA students, faculty and staff members. It is a night filled with free food, music and a chance to fellowship with friends.

Rec Center Closed
The Rec Center will be closed all day for student staff training. The building will be open Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19 as regularly scheduled to accommodate the students and parents taking tours on Move in Day and Week of Welcome activities on Sunday.

Cool off with a glass of limeade and learn about LimeBike, South’s new bike share program. Demo the bike, download the app, and get a refresher about responsible bike share.

Refreshments and giveaways both days. Meet other transfer students and University staff and learn tips and tricks from the experts to make your first semester at South great!

Need a way to ease your mind after the first day of classes? Mentalist Sean Bott will be on campus for a one time only show! With mind reading, telepathy, and predicting the future, he will freak you out and make you laugh at the same time. Don’t even bother trying to figure him out just come and enjoy the show in the Student Center Ballroom on Wednesday, August 22th at 7pm for an amazing psychedelic experience!

JP Week of Welcome Movie – Avengers: Infinity Wars

Jaguar Productions welcomes you back to school! Bring your friends and come on out for a fun, free movie and popcorn. It will be a great time with the Avengers: Infinity Wars. We look forward to seeing you Thursday, August 23rd at 7PM in the Student Center Ballroom.

Auditions for Theatre USA’s fall productions are scheduled for this coming Thursday evening, at 7pm, in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center. The shows are the musical Godspell, and Jane Austin’s classic Sense and Sensibility. Auditions are open to all USA students. The Success Summit is a half-day event designed for any and all USA students who want to start their semester in the right direction and enhance their academic performance. We will be collecting food (peanut butter, canned tuna and canned meat) for the Joseph Project; writing letters to veterans through Soldier's Angels; and collecting personal hygiene items and home cleaning products for Penelope House. Give back together with Jag Nation and be the change!
