Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that education should connect theory, research, and real-world practice. I strive to create learning environments in which students are challenged to think critically, examine multiple perspectives, and apply knowledge to complex leadership situations. My approach is shaped by professional experience across higher education, Pk-12 educational leadership, and law enforcement. These experiences have reinforced my belief that effective leadership requires collaboration, ethical decision-making, and an understanding of organizational systems.

Research:

My research focuses on educational leadership, school safety, organizational decision-making, student discipline, and threat assessment processes while intersecting leadership theory and professional practice. A central component of my scholarly agenda is the development of the Interorganizational School Safety Leadership Framework (ISSLF), which examines how educational leaders collaborate with emergency responders, community organizations, and emergent stakeholders during complex crises and school safety challenges. My research emphasizes the importance of dynamic reassessment, recognizing that leadership decisions must evolve as circumstances, information, and stakeholder involvement change.

Outreach:

My outreach focuses on building meaningful relationships among universities, Pk-12 schools, law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, juvenile justice organizations, and community organizations. I seek opportunities to provide professional development, leadership training, school safety consultation, and collaborative planning and research for practical use. My particular emphasis is on strengthening interorganizational relationships before crises occur through communication, joint training, and shared problem-solving.

Biography:

Dr. Robert Lopez is an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of South Alabama with extensive leadership experience across higher education, Pk-12 education, and law enforcement. His professional background includes service as a department chair and associate dean, and as a PK-12 administrator, including assistant principal, athletic director, principal, director of student services, and executive director of crisis and safety, along with service as a police chief. His teaching and research emphasize educational leadership, school safety, legal and ethical decision-making, crisis leadership, and interorganizational collaboration.
