Dr. Kelly Byrd, assistant professor of elementary mathematics education at the University of South Alabama College of Education and Professional Studies, had an article published recently in the Journal of Research in Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (JRSMTE). Byrd also won the gold medal at the First Annual JRSMTE Graduate Student Special Edition Awards Ceremony.

“This award validates all of the hard work that one dedicates to conducting an important dissertation study and producing an article from that study,” Byrd said. “I am beyond humbled, and I am so very grateful for this award.”

The publication featured an article from Byrd’s dissertation “Elementary preservice teacher preparation to teach mathematics and science in an integrated STEM framework.” The dissertation investigated how different methods of instruction of courses for elementary preservice teachers resulted in varying levels of confidence when teaching those topics.

“My goal is to encourage my graduate students to publish their hard work and never doubt their ability as scholarly writers in the field of education,” Byrd said.

The article is currently featured on the journal’s homepage.
