New doctoral program prepares experienced educators to support teacher development and strengthen the teacher workforce across Alabama and the Gulf Coast.

he University of South Alabama College of Education and Professional Studies is now accepting applications for a new Doctor of Education in Teacher Education, a program designed to strengthen teacher development and instructional leadership across Alabama and the Gulf Coast region.

The 60-credit-hour doctoral program is designed for working educators who want to expand their impact while continuing their professional responsibilities. Through a blend of online learning, video instruction and limited face-to-face engagement, the program allows teachers, instructional coaches and district leaders to pursue a doctoral degree without stepping away from full-time roles.

The new program is designed to prepare experienced educators to support teacher development, strengthen instructional practice and help meet the growing need for instructional coaches and teacher leaders across the region.

“Our region is home to many outstanding educators and leaders who are deeply committed to supporting teachers and strengthening instruction,” said Dr. Angela T. Barlow, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of South Alabama. “This doctoral program creates an opportunity for experienced educators to step into leadership roles that support and develop teachers already in the classroom.”

Students will join a cohort of educators focused on advancing teacher development across K–12 systems. The program emphasizes applied leadership, research and practice and includes an applied project. Concentrations include Elementary Literacy, Elementary Numeracy and Secondary Teacher Education. Graduates will be prepared for leadership roles such as instructional coaches, district teacher leaders and professional development specialists. Applications are now open for the Fall 2026 cohort. The program is designed for working educators who want to expand their impact while continuing to serve their schools and communities.
