Faculty panelGraduate students in the Basic Medical Sciences program recently gathered for another session in the Beyond the Bench: Mapping Your Career DNA professional development series, which featured a faculty panel focused on careers in academia. The discussion brought together Allyson Shea, Ph.D.; Jamie Meegan, Ph.D.; Phoibe Renema, Ph.D.; and Brad Swiger, Ph.D., who shared personal insights into their journeys through graduate school, postdoctoral training, and ultimately into academic careers.

Throughout the session, each panelist reflected on the different paths that led them to their current roles. They spoke about how their interests developed during graduate training, how their postdoctoral experiences helped shape their research and career goals, and the importance of remaining flexible as opportunities arise along the way. Although each path was unique, the panelists emphasized that careers in science are rarely linear and often evolve over time.

A central theme of the discussion was the importance of mentorship. The faculty shared how supportive mentors played a significant role in guiding their scientific development and helping them navigate key career decisions. They encouraged students to seek mentors who not only support their research but also invest in their professional growth and long-term goals.

The faculty also spoke candidly about the challenges they encountered during their graduate and postdoctoral training. They shared how these experiences shaped their perspectives on academic careers and emphasized the importance of strong mentorship and open communication with one’s principal investigator. The panelists also encouraged students to seek opportunities to gain teaching experience, such as serving in adjunct roles, to build classroom confidence while exploring different aspects of an academic career.

The session concluded with thoughtful questions from students about preparing for academic careers, building professional networks, and developing the skills necessary to succeed as faculty members. By sharing their personal experiences, the panelists provided valuable perspectives and encouragement for students considering academia as a potential career path.

The Beyond the Bench: Mapping Your Career DNA series continues on March 18 with guest speaker Griffin Wright, Ph.D., a Basic Medical Sciences alumnus who now serves as an associate director of scientific content. Wright will share his professional journey and discuss how his graduate training prepared him for a career beyond traditional academic pathways.
