Binata Mukherjee, M.D., MBA, assistant dean for faculty and professional development at the Whiddon College of Medicine, presented a poster at the 16th annual Coaching in Leadership & Healthcare Conference 2026, held May 1–2 in Boston.

Mukherjee led a scoping review of 141 peer-reviewed studies examining coaching programs in undergraduate and graduate medical education, focusing on outcomes, success factors and implementation barriers. The review found that coaching is increasingly used to support learners in areas such as competency, wellness, interpersonal skills and self-directed learning.

Successful programs were linked to strong institutional support and well-trained coaches, while common challenges included time constraints, unclear roles and varying learner readiness. The analysis also found wide variation in how coaching programs are integrated across academic medical centers, offering guidance for institutions developing and evaluating similar initiatives.

Mukherjee presented on behalf of the study's authors: Jenna Pfleeger, M.D., assistant professor of family medicine; Haidee Custodio, M.D., professor of pediatrics; Maria R. Roca, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics; Gurupreet K. Khalsa, Ph.D., Counseling and Instructional Sciences; and Clista Clanton, MSLS, Charles M. Baugh Biomedical Library.
