The Department of Emergency Medicine was well represented at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) 2026 Annual Meeting, with faculty and residents participating in national educational, scholarly, and team-based events. Beyond the academic programming, the meeting also provided valuable opportunities for fellowship, mentorship, collaboration, team building, and for strengthening the department's sense of community.
Faculty attendees included Edward Panacek, M.D.; Walker Plash, M.D.; Caroline Molins, M.D.; Christopher Musselwhite, M.D.; Beau Stokes, M.D.; Krista Maier, D.O.; Kaitlyn Hall, M.D.; and Carmen J. Martinez, M.D. Resident attendees included MaryAnn Mendes, M.D.; Larry Stutts, D.O.; Nick Gregory, M.D.; Jashen Bailey, D.O.; Leigh Fountain, D.O.; and Sam Anich, D.O.
Plash served as a planner for MedWAR, an outdoor Medical Wilderness Adventure Race that combines wilderness medicine, simulation, strategy, teamwork and field-based emergency scenarios. Plash also moderated and led a station. Bailey, Molins and Martinez served as moderators and station leaders. Residents Mendes, Stutts and Gregory competed as a team named Hammerin’ Hanks Solution and placed 10th out of 19 teams.

Stokes and Hall led the department’s SonoGames team, comprising residents Anich, Fountain and Bailey. SonoGames is SAEM’s national point-of-care ultrasound competition, in which resident teams complete fast-paced challenges that test ultrasound skills, clinical knowledge, communication, teamwork and creativity. The team, Rings of Power, proudly earned the Best Costume award.
Molins and Martinez also co-led the SAEM Education Summit, The Productive Educator’s Playbook, which focused on strategies to enhance productivity, sustainability and professional growth in medical education. The summit was exceptionally well received, with stellar feedback from attendees.
This strong showing underscores the department’s continued commitment to academic emergency medicine, resident development, educational innovation, mentorship, and national engagement.
