John Soltys, M.D., Ph.D., who recently completed a neurology residency at USA Health, soon will begin a two-year fellowship at Oxford University in England, where he will train in autoimmune neurology with one of the leading physician-scientists in the field.

Soltys will train under Sarosh Irani, F.R.C.P., D. Phil, F.E.A.N., professor of autoimmune neurology at Oxford University. Irani was awarded the Graham-Bull Prize in Clinical Science / Goulstonian Lectureship by the Royal College of Physicians in 2019.

“During my fellowship, I’ll be seeing clinical patients and doing a clinical research project looking at the natural history of autoimmune encephalitis,” Soltys said. “My main drive is to study under the leading researchers in the field.”

Irani oversees the Oxford Autoimmune Neurology Group, which works to improve treatments and outcomes for patients with autoantibody-mediated diseases of the nervous system and understand the biology behind those conditions. Soltys’ project will focus on autoimmune encephalitis, a rare condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy brain cells, leading to inflammation of the brain.

Soltys, a native of Victor, New York, earned a medical degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Anschutz Medical Campus. He most recently served a chief administrative resident in neurology at USA Health.
