Audition Information

Woodwind and Brass Auditions 

Woodwind and Brass players auditioning for the JMB will be asked to perform the following. The audition is informal, and no prepared piece is required other than "South!". 

  1. Scales: Perform the F, Bb, Eb, and Ab concert major scales in two octaves from memory with arpeggios (in eighth notes at quarter note=120). Saxophones may perform the Bb concert major scale one octave to avoid altissimo register.
  2. Perform the chromatic scale from memory in at least two octaves from any starting note (in eighth notes at quarter note=120)
  3. A Short Sight Reading Excerpt
  4. Perform our fight song, South! Starting on the 3rd line (pdfs of music below) 

Most students will audition on one of the four audition dates listed below:

Saturday, February 28, 2026

Saturday, April 4, 2026


Only extenuating circumstances, students can set up an audition on a different day with our faculty. This should only be considered when there are conflicts with all of the listed audition days and/or students live long distances from Mobile, AL. If this is the case, please select “I need to request a special audition date” when filling out the following application.

**Please note: We prefer most students come to campus for an in person audition as listed in the previous section. Video auditions should only be utilized for students who live a long distance from our campus or have already communicated with one of our directors.
