Resources for Parents & Families
Written by parents, for parents to better understand fraternity and sorority life.
Tips for Supporting Your Student
1. Talk Through the Benefits Together
Joining a fraternity or sorority at South Alabama is about more than just letters; it’s about community, personal growth, leadership, service, and support. These organizations provide meaningful opportunities to connect, get involved, and grow during college and beyond. Take a moment to talk with your student about what they hope to gain from their experience.
2. Help Them Understand the Joining Process
Each of our three councils (IFC, CPC, and NPHC) has its own recruitment or intake process. Review the processes with your student so they feel confident and informed as they explore membership. You can find more details about each process on our website or by reaching out to our office.
3. Have Conversations About Values, Priorities, and Balance
The first few weeks of school can be a busy time. Encourage your student to keep academics a top priority while managing new member activities, classes, and social events. They’ll receive a schedule from their organization, help them think through how to balance everything responsibly.
This is also a good time to talk about safety and personal responsibility. We offer education and resources to help students make informed decisions. Encourage your student to stay informed about university policies and chapter expectations.
4. Discuss Time and Financial Commitments
Membership involves both time and financial obligations. Some are required, while others are optional. Talk with your student about budgeting and using a calendar to manage meetings, events, and dues. Planning ahead will help them stay organized and reduce stress.
5. Find Ways to Stay Involved
Many chapters host parent and family events throughout the year, such as Family Weekend or chapter open houses. Some also offer newsletters or volunteer opportunities. Ask your student if their organization has ways for families to stay connected.
6. Encourage, Support, and Stay Informed
Your support matters. Keep the lines of communication open, ask questions, offer encouragement, and talk about expectations. If something feels off, or if you’re unsure where to turn, don’t hesitate to contact the Fraternity & Sorority Life office. We’re here to help your student have a positive and meaningful experience.
