WINTER BREAK TIMELINE: 12/8/17 (12 PM) - 1/5/18 (9 AM)


The residence halls will close for Winter Break beginning Friday, December 8, 2017 at 12:00 PM (noon) and remain closed until Friday, January 5, 2018 at 9:00 AM. Learn how to register for Break Housing below.

 

WINTER BREAK HOUSING ELIGIBILITY

Fall 2017 residents who are enrolled for Spring Semester 2018 and have a completed 'Academic Year 2017-2018' housing contract are eligible for Break Housing (upon request). Break Housing registration will allow the resident to remain in room throughout Winter Break (see timeline above)

Fall residents whose Winter Break plans include remaining on campus or gaining access to their room at any time during the break MUST register for Break Housing by December 1, 2017 @ 11:59 PM to ensure they have access to their residence hall room throughout the Winter Break Housing period and avoid a late registration fee. Card access will cut off at 12:00 PM (noon) on the last day of final exams (Thursday, December 7th). All residence halls will remain open for residents who have completed Winter Break registration.

NOTE: If you withdraw from Spring Semester 2018 classes and/or cancel your Academic Year 2017-2018 housing contract, you will no longer be eligible to remain on campus during the Winter Break Housing period (see timeline above) and should be prepared to check-out properly*, in person, at your Community Office within 48 hours following your withdrawal OR by Friday, December 8, 2017 @ 12 PM (whichever is later) to avoid additional charges.

COSTS/ASSOCIATED FEES
There is no charge ($0) to remain on campus in your room during the Winter Break as long as your Break Housing registration is completed prior to the deadline (December 1 @ 11:59 PM) and you remain enrolled for spring semester 2018.

All Break Housing requests received AFTER December 1 will be subject to a late registration charge of $100.00. Any applicable charges will be assessed to the student's account (PAWS) after Winter Break.


BREAK HOUSING REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

Spring Semester 2018 class registration MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE BREAK HOUSING REGISTRATION as students will NOT be able to access the 'Break Housing' request form until the system is able to verify enrolled hours for Spring Semester 2018.

TO REGISTER: Log on to southalabama.edu/MyUSAHousing

> Select 'Break Housing / Late Stay' (top center under USA logo)
> Select your current room assignment (click 'Start / View Request')
> Everyone who is enrolled for spring 2018 will be routed to the Break Housing Registration page
> Those who are not enrolled for spring 2018 will be routed to the Late Stay Request page
> Review 'Welcome' page details then click 'Continue'
> Provide the requested information then click 'Save & Continue'
> Continue to monitor your JagMail and Break Housing Confirmation page for more info as needed

After December 1, Break Housing registration will only be available by contacting your respective Community Office (click here for phone numbers) and asking to speak with your Community Director OR the Community Director On-Call.


SERVICE INTERRUPTIONS
during the Winter Break

Dining Services
Please Note: During break periods, such as Winter Break, the Dining Hall is CLOSED and meal plans are NOT ACTIVE. There are limited on-campus dining options available during the Winter Break period. The last day of service for the Fresh Food Company (Dining Hall) prior to Winter Break will be Thursday, December 7, 2017. The first day of service for the Fresh Food Company (Dining Hall) after the Winter Break will be Sunday, January 7, 2018.

Annual Campus-Wide Power Outage
A campus-wide* power outage for electrical maintenance is scheduled to take place during the Winter Break. This power outage will take place on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM (12 Hrs). *USA Grove Housing will not be impacted by this outage.
 
Although students registered for break housing are able to remain in their residence hall during this time, remember that during an electrical outage all lighting, power outlets, air conditioning, heating, and internet will be affected (including laundry rooms).
 
How to prepare for the power outage:
-  Computers and other electronic equipment are sensitive to electrical outages. We recommend unplugging this
   equipment before the outage.
-  Special refrigerated items may need to be removed as refrigerators and freezers will not have power during this
   time.
For rooms with stoves/ovens: Remember to check that all cooking appliances are turned off before the outage
   and ensure that no items are left inside or on top of the unit.
 
Communications Outage: Cable & Internet
Due to a planned communications outage by University Computer Services, a communications outage will take place on Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM (12 hrs) disrupting cable AND internet service for all residents. Please direct all questions to the Housing Facilities Office (fixit@southalabama.edu / (251) 460-7655).

Each CD has office hours Monday – Friday, 1 PM – 5 PM.
