Audition for the JMB
PLEASE NOTE: This page and requirements listed are for students wishing to march in the Jaguar Marching Band, not for Music Majors or Minors. For details on those auditions, please visit this page. Students who pass the Music Major/Minor admission audition will have their Jaguar Marching Band audition waived.
Do you want to be a part of the JMB? All it takes is two easy steps!
Step 1 - Apply to the University of South Alabama!
Membership in the Jaguar Marching Band (JMB) is open to all full-time students at the University of South Alabama, regardless of their major. To audition, students must first apply and be fully admitted to the university. Only admitted students will be considered for full acceptance into the band and eligible for scholarship offers.
Step 2 - Sign up for an Audition!
Woodwind and Brass Auditions
Woodwind and Brass players auditioning for the JMB will be asked to perform the following. The audition is informal, and no prepared piece is required other than "South!".
- Scales: Perform the F, Bb, Eb, and Ab concert major scales in two octaves from memory with arpeggios (in eighth notes at quarter note=120). Saxophones may perform the Bb concert major scale one octave to avoid altissimo register.
- Perform the chromatic scale from memory in at least two octaves from any starting note (in eighth notes at quarter note=120)
- A Short Sight Reading Excerpt
- Perform our fight song, South! Starting on the 3rd line (pdfs of music below)
Most students will audition on one of the four audition dates listed below:

February 5-7, 2026 (Concert Honor Band Participants Only)
Saturday, February 28, 2026
Saturday, March 21, 2026
Saturday, April 4, 2026
Only extenuating circumstances, students can set up an audition on a different day
with our faculty. This should only be considered when there are conflicts with all
of the listed audition days and/or students live long distances from Mobile, AL. If
this is the case, please select “I need to request a special audition date” when filling
out the following application.
**Please note: We prefer most students come to campus for an in person audition as listed in the previous section. Video auditions should only be utilized for students who live a long distance from our campus or have already communicated with one of our directors.
