Learning That Goes Beyond the Classroom

The University of South Alabama Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences offers majors and minors for undergraduate students.  Introductory and core classes for undergraduates are offered at the main campus in Mobile, Alabama. Our location on the northern portion of the Gulf coast provides access to diverse habitats, including: the Mobile Tensaw Delta, Mobile Bay, the Mississippi Sound, open Gulf habitats, and numerous barrier islands.


     The Bachelor of Science in Marine Sciences is designed to address society's need for specialized understanding of the marine environment. Whether you are excited about marine plants and animals or computers and technology, the marine sciences program provides opportunities to explore coastal and ocean environments in whatever way interests you most. Our world-renowned faculty have expertise ranging from fisheries sciences to ocean physics.  A marine sciences degree prepares you for career opportunities related to the marine environment in government, academic, commercial and industrial settings.

   The Bachelor of Science in Environment and Sustainability Sciences is designed to help you gain an understanding of the natural world and its interaction with the demands of human development. The program is lead by faculty who are experts in both natural and social sciences and have experience working in coastal areas and with communities to develop sustainable solutions to meet the needs of the present without causing harm to the environment, economy, or society.

     You will learn scientific methods and applied analysis skills using advanced field techniques,instrumentation, and data to study the environment. This program has an interdisciplinary approach, combining different fields to explore the complex relationship between humans and nature.  A degree in environment and sustainability sciences prepares you for career opportunities in sustainability, renewable energy, conservation, urban planning and development and more.
