Dean

Greetings from the College of Arts & Sciences. I am Dr. Andrzej Wierzbicki, Dean of the College, and I am happy to share with you the August 2020 Arts & Sciences Newsletter. This issue features articles on four faculty members and one recent graduate who will be starting graduate school soon in Europe.

The first article features Dr. Thomas Rowell, Professor of Music. Dr. Rowell coordinates graduate studies in music, vocal studies, and he directs USA Opera Theatre. Many of Rowell’s students have won or placed in state, regional, national, and international vocal competitions.

The next article focuses on alumna Marilena Caviness, a double major in Spanish and Sociology, who graduated in May 2020. She is leaving soon for Italy to begin studies in the human rights graduate program at Padua University.

The third article features Senior Instructor Katherine Rigsby, who serves as the advisor for students in International Studies. She has been an Arts & Sciences faculty member since August 2004.

The fourth article highlights the research of Dr. Ruth Carmichael, a senior marine scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Dr. Carmichael studies human influences on a range of species, from shellfish such as oysters and horseshoe crabs to marine mammals such as manatees and bottlenose dolphins.

Dr. Kelly Major, Professor of Biology, is the subject of the fifth and final article. As you will see, her wide-ranging research includes practical and ecological problems associated with invasive plants as well as ecological monitoring of coastal and aquatic plant communities.

I hope that you will enjoy reading this month’s newsletter.

Sincerely,

Dr. Andrzej Wierzbicki
Dean
