Therapeutic Recreation Program
Students may pursue a bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy. Recreational Therapy (RTH) is a profession committed to helping persons with disabilities and those marginalized by conditions that affect self-determination, independence and quality of life. RTH is a systematic process using a diverse range of activities and experiences to achieve health-oriented objectives. RTH is a dynamic profession that supports healthy living, active aging, wellness, prevention and living well with chronic conditions using approaches that are supported by evidence based practice. RTH services are designed to assist the individual in changing physical, cognitive, emotional, or social behaviors to enhance functional abilities and promote active and enjoyable participation in life, including recreation and leisure. Practitioners can work in a variety of community, clinical, and residential settings utilizing activity, education, and life-skill development approaches. The RTH process begins with an assessment of the client's needs, abilities and leisure related behaviors. The RTH professional then develops an individualized treatment plan that specifies goals and program interventions. Client progress to meet goals and program effectiveness is evaluated to complete the process. The Recreational Therapy degree plan is designed to meet or exceed certification requirements mandated by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation certification. The curriculum emphasizes practical and/or clinical experience as an important part of the learning process. At least 200 hours of documented field work is required prior to enrolling in a senior level internship as part of the RTH program. Upon completion of this program and being awarded a degree, students are eligible for credentialing as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
